Officers deliver baby in car after father rushes into police station

WOODSTOWN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Two Woodstown police officers are being credited with helping deliver a baby girl after a frantic father ran into the police department seeking help.

Video shows the father sprinting into the station before returning minutes later to his car on West Avenue with Patrolmen Benjamin Haines and Gabriel Chiarelli back on December 9.

"As we were running across the street, we called the ambulance," Haines recalled.

When the officers reached the vehicle's backseat, they discovered a woman in active labor.

"We weren't really expecting that - especially the baby coming out when we opened the car door," Chiarelli said.

A significant challenge was the language barrier. Using Google Translate, the officers coached the woman through contractions.

"So I put my gloves on and went in there," Haines said. "I just told her to breathe and push, and she did."

Both officers have been on the job less than two years and had only basic CPR training, but they acted immediately and without hesitation.

A little more than 10 minutes later, medics arrived at the scene.

"They didn't have much time to think. They just reacted, and they did everything they possibly could - they did it right," said Chief Ryan DeFalco.

The officers say they were simply doing their jobs.
